On June 23rd, Canine Trooper Zachary Vasquez of Alpine and his K-9 partner, Guido, were involved in a head-on collision on US Highway 67, just north of Alpine.
Trooper Vasquez was struck by a pickup truck that crossed into his lane, resulting in the crash. An officer with the Alpine Police Department, who was directly ahead of Trooper Vasquez, arrived at the scene within a minute and immediately applied tourniquets. Additional responding officers and Troopers assisted with emergency care.
Trooper Vasquez was transported by EMS to Big Bend Regional Medical Center with multiple injuries to his legs. He was shortly airlifted to University Medical Center (UMC) in El Paso for further treatment. He is expected to undergo multiple surgeries over the coming days.
Guido was evaluated by a veterinarian in Alpine and was also transported to El Paso for an additional assessment. Thankfully, Guido is doing well and is awaiting a reunion with his handler.
The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased as a result of the crash.
The DPS Troopers Foundation has started a Help A Hero campaign to assist Trooper Vasquez and his family as there will be a long road to recovery. Help A Hero charges a fee up front. 100% of the funds raised will go to assist Trooper Vasquez.
If you are able, please donate. Please keep Trooper Vasquez, his family and K9 Guido in your prayers as well as the deceased driver of the pickup truck.
