Critical Incident

On the morning of Sunday, March 20, SLPD Officer Ruben Munoz was involved in a series of car crashes on U.S. 59 southbound near Highway 90 Alternate.

Sugar Land officers were initially called to a single-vehicle crash just before 2 a.m. where it was reported that the driver hit some type of debris on the roadway and hit an interior wall.

While officers took the driver to a nearby facility for a sobriety test, Officer Munoz remained on the scene while a tow truck came to remove the damaged vehicle from the side of the road.

According to the police, it was during that time that a pickup truck struck the patrol vehicle with Munoz inside. Paramedics were called to assist Officer Munoz as he fell unconscious.

Meanwhile, as Officer Munoz was being treated, police said another woman driving a Jeep struck the pickup truck.

Officer Munoz, the driver in the Jeep, and the driver in the pickup truck were all transported to local hospitals. Officer Munoz remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery, according to Chief Robins.

The woman involved in the crash also remains in critical condition, while the driver in the pickup truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Officer Munoz has been with the department for over a year.

Thank you to Officer Munoz and your entire family for your service. I realize it's not just the police officer who serves his or her fellow man. It is his or her entire family who lends support and love to that officer every day, enabling him to do the job better I know that when one of the family hurts, you all hurt. For your bravery and willingness to put your lives on the line for people you don't even know in the community you serve, I thank you, respect you, and revere you.
