Sergeant Don Nelson proudly served the Tooele City Police Department for 22 years. He began his career as an Animal Control Officer and quickly rose through the ranks, earning a position as a full-time officer. Don dedicated himself to the department, eventually becoming a Patrol Sergeant and taking a lead role in mentoring new officers through the Field Training Program. His leadership, integrity, and dedication made a lasting impact on everyone he worked with.
In January 2025, Don retired to enjoy the fruits of his hard-earned pension and spend more time with his beloved wife, children, and—of course—his cherished cabin.
Shortly after retiring, Don was diagnosed with stage four melanoma. A biopsy revealed a growth in his throat and further scans found lesions on his brain. In early January, he experienced stroke-like symptoms and underwent emergency brain surgery to treat bleeding caused by one of the lesions. He is now undergoing treatment, including medication, but doctors have said the cancer is too advanced to remove and it may or may not respond to treatment.
Despite the diagnosis, Don remains in good spirits, determined to make the most of every day with his family and friends.
Don has always gone above and beyond to help others, both in and out of uniform. Now it’s our turn to show up for him. We’re asking our community, fellow officers, and friends across the state to rally in support of Sgt. Nelson during this difficult time. Every bit of help makes a difference.
