Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix was off duty Saturday, December 30th, 2023, when he saw a crime in progress, tried to stop it, and was shot. Life-saving efforts by EMS and other first responders were unsuccessful, and Sergeant Nix succumbed to his injuries.

His family and colleagues remember Sergeant Nix as a loving husband, father, son, brother, and dedicated public servant who served the citizens of Greensboro for more than 23 years.

During his time with GPD, Sergeant Nix worked as a Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Detective, Patrol Corporal, Patrol Sergeant, Police Training Officer, and Financial Crimes Detective, and his most current assignment was as Supervisor of the Family Victims Unit.

As Supervisor of the Family Victims Unit, Sergeant Nix served as part of the Elder Justice Committee and the Domestic Violence High-Risk Team and routinely assisted with the Friends Against Fraud and Vital Signs Programs. He was also a Team Leader for the Peer Support Team for over 12 years and was the current Assistant Team Leader of the Greensboro Police Department Honor Guard. Sergeant Nix had been a member of the US Secret Service Financial Crimes Task Force and the U.S. Attorney’s Identity Theft Task Force. He was also one of Guilford County’s leading experts on Non-Fatal Strangulation Investigation. Sergeant Nix was also a longtime member of the Greensboro Police Officer's Association.

After receiving his BA from UNCG and joining the Greensboro Police Department, Sergeant Nix was awarded several departmental awards, including the Greensboro Merchant Association’s Crime Prevention Award, the Department’s Superior Service Bar, and an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.

Please help support Sergeant Nix's family during this tragic time. All proceeds collected will go directly to the Nix family to help cover any immediate or future costs that may arise.

Dale was a good and honorable person who always tried to do the right thing. It is tragic that this fine man was victimized by the same sort of criminal scum that he strove to protect our community from during his distinguished career as a Greensboro Police Officer.

As a mother, knowing all of the work Dale did to protect children from victimization and bringing awareness and education, to groups in the community about it, I am heartbroken. May the Nix family find peace in knowing Dale was one of our communities heroes.

Sincerest thanks you to your husband and your entire family for your years of service and sacrifice. My husband, and our family, were victims of a home invasion many years ago with enduring impact. I lost my husband too young to cancer four years ago. I pray that you all find strength and peace quickly to get you through your days ahead. May you feel God in your presence.
