On behalf of the San Diego Police Officers Association members, it brings tremendous sadness to announce the loss of Officer Gary Bowen. Officer Bowen served our community and was a devoted husband and father.

Officer Gary Bowen was hired by the San Diego Police Department in 1998. Prior to joining SDPD, he enlisted into the United States Navy, where he served as a Corpsman with the US Marines. Gary truly lived a life of service to our country and community from early on in life.

Officer Bowen’s law enforcement work was observed by many law enforcement officers within San Diego County. This was because he was SDPD’s only sketch artist for the last eight years. This unique skill set brought many criminals to justice to no longer victimize those within their communities. Gary also served proudly as a member of the SDPD honor guard team for many years, where he paid respect to fallen officers all across the state and country. In his last assignment, Gary served on the SDPD Homeless Outreach Team, where he worked tirelessly to get people into a shelter and onto an improved path in life.

Gary had a wicked sense of humor and loved to laugh with his family. He leaves behind his wife Monica and their two sons, Trevor and Alex. It is said that his greatest pride was his two sons.

Please consider making a financial contribution to the Bowen family. Donations for the Bowen family are tax-deductible and will go directly to Monica and their sons. The San Diego Police Officers Association, Inc. Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Federal Tax ID #33-0127369. We appreciate your support.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Gary was a friend and fellow Forensic Artist. We had so much admiration for one another’s work. We shared so much. I’m just heartbroken. He will be greatly missed by so many, not only by his family and friends but by the loss of his amazing artistic talent which helped to keep our community a safer place. Rest In Peace my friend. I met Officer Bowen 8 years ago when I was a victim advocate at a rape crisis center. He did a sketch for one of my clients, who was deeply traumatized at the time. Officer Bowen was so friendly and put my client at ease. After that day, I would often see him working the front desk at HQ. He remembered me and we would always have a chat. Even though I'm no longer in SD, I recognized him as soon as I read the CBS headline; his kindness and warmth made him memorable. He helped so many people.
