Meet Joshua Coomes. He is the son & stepson of two officers/FOP members. He has a wife and two dogs as well as  a genetic disease called Alport’s. Alport’s is a type of kidney disease that attacks the x chromosome, and eventually kills the kidneys completely. This is something that he inherited from his mom’s side. Alport’s is passed from female to male. His grandpa had a transplant, and that lasted him about 40 years till he passed away. His mom has had a transplant as well.

He has 2 brothers who are all carriers of Alport’s as well and all will need a transplant at some point in their life. He has been seeing a nephrologist for about six years now. He first went to see one because he was trying to join the military and the military told him that he had protein in my urine and should go get checked. When he first saw the nephrologist his kidney function was only at 33%. The doctor wanted to run a few tests and a biopsy of the kidney. They first did an x-ray of the kidneys and found out that he only has 1.

His kidney function is currently at 19%, and he is on the waiting list for a donor. He has a potential living donor and they are going through the process of seeing if they are a good match or not.
