Jason Barsness has been in law enforcement for over 24 years. The past seven years as a Police Sergeant for the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board. Prior to his role with the LCB, he was a Senior Police Officer for the Hampton Police Division in VA for 12 years and also served in the United States Army, Military Police, for 3 years. He has been married to his wife Jennifer for 22 years and has 3 children; Justin who is 19, Janelle who is 16, and Jessica who is 13.

In February 2022 Jason was diagnosed with a spinal cord ependymoma (tumor) in his neck at C4. At the end of March 2022, he underwent surgery to remove the tumor from his spinal cord. The tumor was vascular and large which made surgery difficult but was ultimately successful in a complete resection. Luckily the tumor was benign. He spent over 2 months in the hospital post surgery which included learning how to walk again, although he still needs the aide of a walker. The damage done to his nerves during surgery has caused Jason to not completely recover to 100 percent. He was diagnosed with partial tetraplegia (quadriplegic), which affects everything below his neck. This will be a life long condition for him. He has problems with proprioception which causes problems with walking, balance, fine motor skills, caring for himself, and results in daily neck pain. He returned to work in a limited light duty capacity in September 2022 but as he is unable to fulfill the essential functions of his position.  He he subsequently disability separated from his position with the Liquor and Cannabis Board effective March 10, 2023. This brought an end to his two decade long law enforcement career.

He is in the process of applying for long term disability but any assistance is still months away.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you and God bless on behalf of the Barsness family!
