Officer Michael T. Horan was killed in the line of duty on December 23, 2024. He was a father, husband, son, friend, and much more to his family. He was a protector and provider and an excellent example of what a person should be. His tragic death is grieved by his family, the Greensboro Police Department, the city, and the nation.
Officer Horan was hired by the GPD in September 2017 to start the 103 PBIC Academy. He was an excellent officer. He received a lifesaving award in 2019 for his bravery and quick response when, on a trip to the beach with his family, he put his own life in jeopardy, knowingly entering an active rip current before swimming approximately 60 yards to save the life of a man and his son from drowning, which would have caused an unimaginable tragedy to a family. He had an outstanding reputation inside the Department and the community.
Officer Horan was a man of service. He has served not only his community as a Police Officer but also as a member of the US Coast Guard since January 2000. While in the US Coast Guard, he served as a Law Enforcement Officer, Tactical Fast Boat instructor, and Search and Rescue operator for the safety and security of the United States. He also served as a Lieutenant, Lifeguard, and Instructor at the Beach Haven Beach Patrol, Beach Haven, NJ, from June 1995 to 2017.
The loss of a man like Michael Horan rips a hole in the hearts of his family, squad mates, friends, and community. He will not be present with his family at this time of year due to a senseless killing. The city lost an excellent officer, the Coast Guard lost a coast guardsman, but most importantly, his children lost a father, a wife lost a husband, and a family lost a pillar of strength. Our hearts are with his family during this time.
