Police Officer Eric Estrada and Sergeant Lee Sorensen were shot and killed while responding to multiple 911 hang-up calls at a residence near 700 North and 200 East in Tremonton after 9:00 p.m.

One of the officers was talking to a resident in the home about a domestic dispute, a man exited the house with a gun, opened fire, and mortally wounded the officer. Another officer arrived as back-up and was also shot and killed. A deputy and a K9 from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while in their patrol vehicle.

As additional officers arrived, bystanders convinced the man to surrender. He was arrested and charged with aggravated murder.

Officer Estrada had served with the Tremonton-Garland Police Department for less than a year and previously served with the North Park Police Department, Box Elder County Sheriff's Office, and Logan City Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.

I had the pleasure of knowing Eric when we attended high school and later police academy. He had a great dry sense of humor and took the many “CHIPS” references with stride. My heart goes out to his family and to all those affected by this tragedy. - The Davies Family

Our officers are heroes. And on that night officer Estrada and Sergeant Lee bravely helped a woman in need of safety. They sacrificed everything. I know they would want their sweet families taken care of. I love Brittney. I'm here for her for the long haul.

Our son, Matt Lewis, was a good friend to Eric. He mentioned they played hours of Halo, had classes together and chatted in the hallways of Mt. Crest every day. Classmates called him "Chipz". Matt said he had a great smile and a fun disposition. Eric will be missed but never forgotten!

My father was a police officer in Portland Oregon during the 70’s and because of that I have a deep appreciation for those who serve our country fighting for safety. 💛 My husband and I are so sorry for these families losses. 😔

Eric was a great example of service and gave unselfishly to his community. I'm proud to have known him. We were proud to have known him as a youth soccer coach years ago. His smile was contagious, as was his energy. Our sincere condolences to his family. He was a good man, and will be missed.

Eric was on our soccer team in his teen years. We were so lucky to get to be with Eric! He was a gifted player, a hard worker and his smile lifted everyone! He was always kind, respectful and appreciative as well as being so kind to our young daughter who “got to” go to the soccer practices and games. He was a delight to coach who went on to coach countless kids. Our hearts ache for his wife and kids. He’ll forever be one of “our boys”. He truly gave his life serving. We love you Eric!
